How to Wear and Remove PPE

Steps to put on a mask:

1. Wash your hands thoroughly for at least 20 seconds and/or apply hand sanitizer.

2. Get a mask, preferably made of tightly-woven fabric with multiple layers. Avoid neck gaiters and masks with exhalation valves as they aren't very effective. Donate any N95 respirators to healthcare workers and first responders as they are in short supply.

3. Put the mask over your nose and mouth and secure it under your chin.

4. Try to fit it snugly against the sides of your face.

Steps to put on gloves:

1. Wash your hands thoroughly for at least 20 seconds and/or apply hand sanitizer.

2. Get clean gloves that are the right size for your hands.

3. Using your non-dominant hand, pick up the glove for your other hand by the cuff. Be careful to touch just the inside of the cuff and glove. This part will touch your skin when the glove is on your hand.

4. Let the glove hang with the fingers pointing downward. Then slide your dominant hand into the glove with your palm facing up and your fingers open. Avoid touching the glove package.

5. If the glove does not go on straight, wait to adjust it until you put on the other glove. Keep your hands above your waist to make sure they stay sterile.

6. Use your gloved hand to slide your fingers under the cuff of the second glove. Only touch the outside of this glove. This part will not be against your skin when the glove is on your hand.

7. Repeat step 4 with your non-dominant hand.

8. Adjust both gloves until they fit properly.

Steps to remove face masks properly:

1. Untie the mask's strings behind your head or stretch its ear loops.

2. Remove the mask, only handling it by the ear loops or ties and not touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.

3. Fold outside corners together.

4. If it's a single-use mask, cut off the strings/ear loops and dispose of it in a trash can. If it's a reusable mask, place it in the washing machine.

5. Wash your hands thoroughly for at least 20 seconds and/or apply hand sanitizer.

Steps to remove disposable gloves properly:

1. Pinch and hold the outside of the glove near the wrist area.

2. Peel downwards and away from the wrist, turning the glove inside out.

3. Pull until the glove is removed from the hand.

4. With your un-gloved hand, slide your finger/s under the wrist of the remaining glove without touching the outside of the glove.

5. Repeat steps 2 and 3 with the second glove. Both gloves should be inside out, one glove inside the other, with no contaminant on your bare hands.

6. Dispose of the gloves in a trash can.

7. Wash your hands thoroughly for at least 20 seconds and/or apply hand sanitizer.

It is important to put on, wear, remove, and dispose of PPE (personal protective equipment) properly. Otherwise, you risk contaminants entering your body or spreading the coronavirus more easily through litter.
